This piece was meticulously crafted using a tool called a tjanting, rather than being stamped or printed. Each dot and line was individually hand-drawn with hot wax before undergoing multiple cycles of dyeing, boiling, and rewaxing—repeated as needed based on the design's complexity. Creating a piece like this can take anywhere from four to six months or even longer.
The batik features a stunning array of motifs, including tigers, elephants, peacocks, monkeys, various birds, and intricate floral and fauna patterns. The design reflects strong influences from Chinese immigrants who primarily settled in Java’s northern coastal towns.
Notably, the top row of animals is depicted upside down, indicating the top of the kain and serving as a subtle "instruction" for the wearer on how to properly drape the fabric.
Circa 1970s.
