This particular Batik Tulis has "Mega Mendung" motif, and "Parang" motif that was once a forbidden motif reserved only for the Sultan and a few select people within the inner circle of the Royal Court
"Mega Mendung" can be translated as overcast clouds. This motif used to be one of the forbidden motif, reserved for the king.
The philosophy of the Mega Mendung batik is that every human being should strive to stay calm and composed, to quell anger under any circumstances. In other words, the human heart is expected to remain 'cool' even in difficult circumstances, just like the clouds that have the ability to cast shadows that provide shelter from the sun and cools down the temperature. The traditional Mega Mendung batik consists of 7 gradations of colors, stemming from the local believe that the heaven consist of 7 layers, as well as the earth which is believed to be composed of seven layers of the soil.
This has changed overtime and Mega Mendung motif can now be found in either 7, 5 or 3 color gradation. The batik listed has the classic 7 color gradation.
In terms of creation process, Mega Mendung batik can be especially challenging to make when it comes to the dyeing process. Each fabric will need to go through multiple dyeing process, at least once for each color in the gradation. It needs precision, skill, knowledge and patience that only some of the most experienced artisans have.
